General Information
About Saratoga Springs, NY:
Saratoga Springs is an area of 29 square miles, located 1/2 hour north
of the state capital of Albany, NY.
In the Past, Saratoga was about the Battle of Saratoga which took
place in 1777 and was a decisive American victory during the American
Revolution. This location is about 15 miles southeast of Saratoga
Springs, where British General John Burgoyne surrendered to American
General Horatio Gates ending the invasion of British troops from
Canada and New York.
From the late 18th Century, tourism started with regular visits
to the local mineral springs. These springs were said to have remedial
qualities for an array of ailments. The High Rock Springs and The
Saratoga Spa State Park are 2 local spots that feature several
mineral springs that can be visited.
During the early 19th Century, the first hotels started popping
up as Saratoga Springs became a popular Spa destination. Later
this Century brought more growth with the Victorian and Gambling
Eras. The Saratoga Race Course was started by John Hunter and William
R. Travers in 1864 and a casino, today known as the Canfield Casino,
was opened in 1870.
Today, Saratoga Springs is still largely about History and Horse
Racing. The Saratoga Race Course remains the oldest continuously-operating
sports venue / Thoroughbred track in the United States. The season
runs 6 weeks from the end of July to the beginning of September
each year, with the feature race being the Travers Stakes in mid-August.
We at Electric City GTOs are excited to invite you to our region
to share in all that Saratoga Springs has to offer – the
